On this blog we’ve talked a little bit about self driving cars augmenting or possibly replacing public transport. For me personally, when I first started commuting by bus and train I loved it, it was (relatively) cheap, I could read or listen to my iPod or read a book. No getting stuck in peak hour traffic and having to fight for a car park. After a few years though public transport began to grate on me, I hated being packed like a sardine in a can on peak hour trains, and even when I got a seat I started resenting the other passengers encroaching on my personal space.
In short I now believe that most people would choose something other than public transport if given the choice. This article by Esther Kim at Yale more or less sums up how I feel. I would go so far as to say I think a lot of people will quickly switch from trains and buses to autonomous robo-taxis just to get some privacy during their commute to work.
