Tom Vanderbilt – who wrote a fantastic post 2 weeks ago on autonomous cars - is back again with a look at the history of autonomous car development:

German aerospace engineer Ernst Dickmanns at Bundeswehr University Munich inaugurated a series of projects in the 1980s that eventually earned him the sobriquet “the pioneer of the autonomous car.”

In 1987, VaMoRs, outfitted with two cameras, eight 16-bit Intel microprocessors and a host of other sensors and software, drove more than 90 km/h (56 mph) for roughly 20 kilometers.

It’s quite an interesting article and features photos of some of the first vehicles ever to be trialed, including the Stanford Cart:

We are ourselves working on two posts – the history of driverless cars and a full run-down on the history of the Google driverless car! Looking forward to it.
